Easy brown bread-really!

Become a domestic goddess (god) by making your own brown/wheaten bread (name depends where you come from!).
There is nothing more delightful than the smell of your very own baked bread as you lift it out of the oven. The most difficult part of this recipe is avoiding the temptation of cutting into the bread when it’s still hot!

Enjoy with a smug grin!

Makes 2 × 2lb loaves

700g coarse wholemeal flour
300g plain flour
2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
2 tablespoons soft light brown sugar
pinch of salt
1,200 mls buttermilk

Preheat your oven to 190 °c
Line two 2lb loaf tins (use loaf tin-liners if possible, so much easier)
Combine all the dry ingredients
Mix in the buttermilk-the mixture will be quite runny but don’t panic!
Pour mixture into the 2 loaf tins
Bake for approx 55 minutes-to ensure bread is cooked, insert a skewer-if it doesn’t come out clean, leave for a few minutes longer; until the skewer comes out clean.
